| The Dominican flag has gone through various modifications. History accounts for at
least fourteen. The first one was used as a symbol of Independence during the war. It
looked very much like the original
Haitian flag with the difference being that the Dominican flag showed " Dios,
Patria y Libertad"
- God Country and Liberty on it.
The second modification was by proclamation of the constitution on November of 1844
(article 195).
The name "República Dominicana". was added; also, "Dios,
Patria y Libertad" was placed
inside a ribbon. In this modification, the two canons disappeared. In the Haitian
flag,they serve as a base.
The only similarity between the latter and the modern,
updated one are: 1 The
book of the evangelist in the center.
2 The laurel which surrounds
it.
3 The flag and its colors
distributed from its center.
4 The liberty cap located
under the evangelist book.
In the emblem of 1853, which appeared on a two peso a bill, one
of the laurels was replaced by a palm leaf. On the bill , the words
"Dios, Patria y Libertad" do not appear, so dictated by
the constitution. |

According to a study made Coronel Ramiro Matos González (Armed Forces
Magazine - July issue of
1975 No.222) " In same the year (1853) by decree of congress, a five pesos
bill was made in
which a coat of arms divided by two white lines. The liberty cap disappears and two flags
appears
in its place. The laurel and palm leaf are interlace under a ribbon with the
sacrosanct words
"Dios, Patria y Libertad" .
Of all the emblems the one that holds more likeness with the one we know today.
is the 1857.
Today's emblem was officially decreed by the president Nouel (1913) drawn
by Casimiro de Moya.
